Pneumonia
Ahead of diarrhea, pneumonia is the #1 killer of children under 5. In low-resource areas, X-ray machines and other equipment for diagnosing pneumonia are not readily available, and pneumonia is easily mistaken for other illnesses. Finding other ways of quickly diagnosing is a matter of life and death. Counting breaths is a low-cost method; if a child is breathing faster than a certain number of breaths per minute, the likelihood of having pneumonia is high. Working with UNICEF, I helped create a series of videos and printed materials for teaching health workers and caregivers how to do this simple, potentially life-saving test.
